Waterford Farmhouse Revival

When our clients purchased their circa 1749 farmhouse on two and a half acres, they knew it would be a heavy lift to bring it up to date with 21st century standards. Over the centuries the weather and some ill conceived renovations and additions had taken their toll. The house was “kind of wonky” to use our client's words. There were leaning walls, out of place doors, chimneys, and a serpentine path through the upper level. They wanted to bring the house up to date, and at the same time let the historical heart of the farmhouse shine. Another objective was to add an outdoor living space that would allow them to enjoy meals and family time while surrounded by the picturesque rolling hills of rural Loudoun County.

With these goals in mind, we proposed a simplified kitchen design which eliminated the dark wood cabinets and replaced them with new painted flush inset cabinets to allow the original rafters and wood ceiling to stand on their own. Our re-design allocated the middle of the main level for service-oriented functions to consolidate the front entry, back entry, closets, pantry, powder room, and laundry. Upstairs we added a large full bath and created a hallway to give each room its own access without passing through the adjacent rooms. For the outdoor space  we designed a gabled screen porch with access off the dining room and kitchen to allow for a convenient passage from the kitchen to the outdoor dining/kitchen area and panoramic views of the surrounding property.
