The Monument Interiors

This historic 1923 bank building has long been a grand space and an architectural anchor on Winchester’s Old Town walking mall. However, in our world of increased digital banking, it was no longer useful as a bank and a candidate for adaptive re-use. Our client re-imagined the building as an event venue to host a wide range of gatherings—from weekly concerts to weddings, yoga classes, film festivals, charity events, and conferences. Our firm was brought in after work by the primary architect/architect-of-record was completed. We were tasked with creating an interior design scheme encompassing the materials selection, color pallette, lighting design, and considering the acoustic properties of the space in conjunction with the new design elements. The new design scheme pushes the difference between the building’s two levels. By removing the existing plaster finishes on the main level to expose the rough brick and concrete, the character of the primary space was re-defined. In contrast, on the mezzanine level, restoration of the fine plaster detailing and more refined elements maintain the grandeur of the historic bank.

The underside of each mezzanine features a sound-baffling arrangement of cut plywood modules that also accommodates the lighting and fire protection systems. Limewash coatings accentuate the existing brick interior walls on the main level, while a contrastingly dark mineral pigment enhances the beauty of the board-formed concrete vault walls nearby. Stained ash hardwood flooring tops the existing concrete slab and warms the interior, while providing a resilient yet softer surface. Motorized sound dampening curtains are adaptable to the varying lighting needs of the grand space and improves the sound quality of live music events. Paints were selected to subtly accentuate the existing trim details while providing a neutral backdrop for a variety of activities. We worked with the owner on the lighting layout and design, which is highly tune-able for a wide array of possibilities.

The building is already experiencing a wealth of new events and patrons, and we are excited to be a part of its new chapter in the Historic District of Winchester.
