Log Cabin Steel Stair

A historic Loudoun County log cabin had wonderfully renovated spaces for the living, dining, and kitchen. However, the existing stairs to the finished basement and loft spaces were each narrow, steep, and unsafe.

Longhouse Architects worked within the existing house volume while maintaining space for the two-story stone fireplace and designed a stair to the loft stacked over a new stair to the basement. The loft stair is designed as a modern steel structure with rustic wood stair treads and minimal steel railings, which maintain the open volume of the log cabin.

A wood-screened coat and shoe zone replaces the the old basement stair and provides tucked-away access to the powder room. The open stair also affords great lookouts for the clients’ cat!
