Dragon’s Home
At Zephaniah Winery, this building is an outbuilding and a backdrop for the star of the show–the car, a 1938 Buick Limited named "The Green Dragon". It’s really cool! The building is a simple, vernacular, matter-of-fact form with board and batten siding and a standing seam metal roof echoing the existing buildings at the winery. A combination of large barn door and garage door openings allow the car and its story to be open to view and shared as an active part of daily life at the winery.
"The car came into the family of Zephaniah Jefferson Hatch in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1938, a significant thing for that day. The car’s first big trip was a family tour of Europe when my dad was 20. It continued on as the family car and pulled a large Airstream trailer crossing from the U.S. many times. It was passed along inside and then outside of our family over time. It lived in California for a good while. I recently rediscovered it, 'the burden of my dreams.' It still runs when it decides it’s a good day for a ride through time."
